WellCare of North Carolina: Prenatal Care Journey
Stop #1: First Prenatal Visit (0-13 weeks)
Goal: Attend during the 1st trimester or within 42 days of getting Medicaid coverage.

- Confirm pregnancy with an OB/GYN.

Stop #2: Second Prenatal Visit (10-12 weeks)
What to expect:
- Blood pressure, weight, and baby’s growth check.
- Listen to baby’s heartbeat.
- Additional testing and ultrasound options:
- Screenings:
- Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) offered at 10 weeks.
- Nuchal translucency (NT) screening offered at 10-14 weeks.
- Diagnostic Tests:
- Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) offered at 10-13 weeks, if needed.

- Consider a doula for pregnancy education and support. A doula is a trained professional who can support you physically, emotionally, and with education through your pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum phase. - Members can get $10 worth of over the counter (OTC) items each month. The OTC benefit can save you money and help you and your family stay healthy. Stop #3: Second Trimester (14-27 weeks)
Routine Visits:
- 16-18 weeks: Routine OB visit.
- 20-22 weeks:
- Ultrasound: Anatomy scan (20 weeks)
- Additional tests for high-risk pregnancies:
- Quad screen (15-22 weeks)
- Amniocentesis (15+ weeks)

- Enroll in Good Measures Diabetes Support by calling 1-877-590-0517
- Join a WellCare Baby Shower! Sign-up by contacting Member Services at 1-866-799-5318.

Stop #4: Third Trimester (28-40 weeks)
Routine Visits:
- 32 weeks: Routine OB visit.
- Be aware of urgent maternal warning signs that could indicators for preeclampsia – Visit website
- Consider signing up for a breastfeeding class offered in the community or by a doula.
- Prepare for your delivery, make sure you have everything you need for yourself and the baby. Have your car seat inspected to make it is installed correctly. Check out this helpful list.
- 36 weeks:
- Confirm baby’s position to evaluate your plans for delivery and complete the Group B Strep culture.
- Order a breast pump by contacting Member Services at 1-866-799-5318.
- Find a pediatrician for your child that is in a convenient location. You will be seeing the pediatrician often during the first year of life. Use our Find a Provider tool.
- 38-40 weeks: Routine OB visits continue.
Stop #5: Labor & Delivery
It is time to check-in to your local hospital’s labor and delivery unit to deliver your baby. Make sure you have notified your support person or doula. Bring your bag and make sure you have your car seat in the car.
