This Minority Mental Wellness Month, WellCare of North Carolina is highlighting factors that can impact the mental health of underserved communities in our state. We strive to improve the mental well-being of our community by providing the resources our members may need to address mental health challenges when they occur.
Marginalized communities are more likely to experience mental health challenges. Because of medical barriers, almost 40% of people from these diverse groups will attempt to manage their mental health challenges on their own. Barriers can include difficulty accessing care, because of geographic distance or transportation challenges or can also be due to cultural and language barriers. These examples, along with many others, are common reasons why members of marginalized communities may not seek mental health services.
We are committed to providing our members with easier access to timely and high-quality mental health services. We work diligently to combat stigmas that may keep individuals from seeking needed treatment.
Small changes can make great strides in improving your mental health. Taking breaks from media, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and staying active are a few helpful things you can do at home. Talking about your mental health challenges, including with your healthcare provider, can also set you up for success on your mental health journey.
This month and every month, we encourage everyone to make goals toward improving their mental health and to always ask for help when you need it. No matter where you are on your mental health journey, WellCare is here to help every step of the way. At WellCare, we are dedicated to supporting those who struggle with mental health challenges by educating and empowering individuals to better understand their health.
We are proud of the work we accomplished through our community partnerships to improve healthcare accessibility. Alongside our local partner organizations, we provide resources to care for those in underserved communities struggling with their mental health.
