Addressing Diabetes Across North Carolina
Diabetes Prevalence in America
Diabetes is an issue close to home. Each year, more than 60,000 adults in our state are diagnosed, and nearly 250,000 more North Carolinians have diabetes but don’t know it. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and now is the time to change the trajectory of diabetes and prediabetes in our state through awareness, prevention, and support.
Across the country, one in 10 people live with diabetes, and in North Carolina alone, more than 1 million adults are living with it. The impact of diabetes is clear: it touches every city, county, and community in our state.
Childhood Diabetes
It’s not just adults who feel the impact of diabetes. Over the past two decades, the number of children and teens diagnosed with type 2 diabetes has been rising at nearly 5% per year. As childhood obesity increases, diabetes is increasing in parallel, and we must act to stop the steady climb of diabetes rates in children and adults across North Carolina.
Prediabetes: A Significant Problem
Prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are chronically higher than normal, poses another challenge for our state. Right now, 34% of North Carolina adults have prediabetes. Prediabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes if not addressed, and risk significant impacts on an individual’s health and longevity.
According to the CDC, approximately one in three adults has prediabetes. However, type 2 diabetes is not inevitable. Lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and prediabetes. Small, everyday modifications can make a big difference.
What Can You Do to Combat the Crisis?
Here’s how you can take steps to reduce your risk and improve your health:
- Get active. Regular physical activity helps manage weight and blood sugar levels.
- Eat well. Focus on balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
- Manage stress. Prioritizing your routine can help to reduce stress. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and check in on your mental health.
- Schedule regular check-ups. Work with your healthcare team to monitor your health and manage any risk factors.
We must commit to raising awareness and supporting those affected by diabetes in our state, this month and beyond. We know that together is the best way to make a difference, and at WellCare, we are dedicated to standing with North Carolinians experiencing diabetes and prediabetes.
